About Me

Multi-faceted artist and percussionist Dr. Reese Rylan Maultsby (b. 1995) is an educator, performer, and composer. His students at A.C. Davis High School (WA) won best percussion at the WSU Marching Band Championships in 2018 as well as first place in the large percussion ensemble category of the 2019 Washinton State Solo and Ensemble Contest. Shortly after, he served as Lecturer in Music for percussion at Washington and Lee University (VA), then Assistant Instructor at The University of Texas. Currently, Dr. Maultsby serves as Assistant Professor of Percussion at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where he coordinates the percussion area and mentors undergraduate and graduate level students. He is a frequently requested guest artist, giving clinics and masterclasses at multiple high schools and universities across the country, as well as international and regional events like the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and PAS sponsored Days of Percussion.

Professionally, Reese has played drum set on cruises across the world with Holland America Lines, served as a percussionist with the American Festival Orchestra during the China and Mongolia tour, and is a founding member of the contemporary chamber group The Austin Percussion Collective. Most recently, Reese toured Spain with the ROMP! percussion quartet and made his Carnegie debut with The University of Texas Wind Ensemble as percussion coordinator. He has continually been involved with the marching arts as a teacher and arranger, working with groups like the Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps, Jeff Chambers Music, and multiple high schools and universities throughout the country. The University of Texas Percussion Ensemble has premiered recent compositions of his, and he is continually writing solo, chamber, and ensemble works for himself and others. His music is published by C. Alan Publications, Cangelosi Publications, and is also available on his website. You can hear his playing on Omar Thomas’ latest record, Griot Songs, as well as Density 512’s album Arnold Rosner: Music for the Symphonic Wind Band.

Dr. Maultsby received two bachelor’s degrees in both music education and percussion performance from Central Washington University, a master’s degree from James Madison University, and a doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin. His primary mentors and instructors are Mark Goodenberger, Casey Cangelosi, Dr. Thomas Burritt, and Ivan Trevino. Outside of percussion, you can find him rock climbing, disc golfing, or enjoying some espresso at a local coffee shop!

Reese proudly endorses Innovative Percussion, Remo Drumheads, and Sabian Cymbals, and is a continual member of the Texas Music Educators Association and Percussive Arts Society.
