About Me

Multi-faceted artist and percussionist Reese Maultsby (b. 1995) is enjoying a wide range of success in his career as a performer, educator, and composer. Winning accolades such as first-prize for the @percussion composition contest, second-prize at the 2019 PASIC Chamber Competition, first-prize at the Central Washington University 2018 Concerto Competition—Reese is continually carving a path for himself today.

As an educator, he has maintained a private studio for over ten years and has led multiple groups to success. Serving as the adjunct percussion professor at Washington and Lee University in Virginia from 2020 to 2021, he taught drum set, percussion, and instructed future music educators on percussion techniques. Currently, Reese is an Assistant Instructor at The University of Texas at Austin where his students perform original music written by himself in the Longhorn Band as well as other varying genres and styles in Longhorn Percussion Ensemble. Before this, he was the Percussion Caption Head and Arranger at A.C. Davis High School and received the first-place high percussion award at the Washington State University Marching Band Championships in 2018. The following year, the A.C. Davis Percussion Ensemble won first-place at the 2019 Washington State Solo and Ensemble Competition.

Performing professionally in many states and countries across the world, Reese has played drum-set on cruises across the world with Holland America Lines, served as a percussionist with the American Festival Orchestra during the China and Mongolia tour, and is a founding member of the recent chamber group The Austin Percussion Collective. Composing for multiple platforms, he is often commissioned for competitive marching percussion music and continues to write for the contemporary percussion idiom, both solo and chamber works. The University of Texas Percussion Ensemble has premiered two of his recent percussion ensemble works, re: impressions and Drum Quartet No. 1, and he is currently a creative contributor with Jeff Chambers Music.

The marching arts are a sincere passion for this young artist, as he has won a gold medal with IMPACT Percussion at the 2019 WGI Championships, instructing there the year after. Reese also served as an instructor for the Columbians Drum and Bugle Corps after being the center snare and percussion section leader for multiple years. Collegiately, Reese is the marching percussion arranger for both The University of Texas’ Longhorn Band and James Madison University’s Marching Royal Dukes.

Appearing as a guest artist and clinician, he has given masterclasses and presentations to multiple classes and studios throughout the country. Recently signing on as an artist, Reese is proudly endorsed by Innovative Percussion. Currently, Reese holds two bachelor’s degrees from Central Washington University in percussion performance and music education, as well as a master’s degree from James Madison University in percussion performance—and is now A.B.D. in his doctoral degree at The University of Texas at Austin. His primary instructors have been Dr. Thomas Burritt, Ivan Trevino, Casey Cangelosi, and Mark Goodenberger. In his off time, you can find him at a local coffee shop or bouldering at the nearby climbing gym!
